Michael Villanueva spent many of his years in Crested Butte where he currently resides. In 1996 Michael opened his own woodworking studio, Wilderness Woodworks and Design, after recognizing his passion for custom furniture. His natural gift and regard for the life of wood had drawn many return clients and has earned him respect from his colleagues. Although the shop he works in is filled with large machinery if you enter his bench room you will notice Michael’s own handmade planes, Japanese saws and chisels which he uses daily. Michael’s well stated Japanese and Swedish influence in his work comes from his travels and schooling spent at the prestigious wood working program at the College of the Redwoods in Fort Bragg, California where world renowned fine wood worker, James Krenov instructed. Michael’s well-earned and privileged spot in the program gave him the advanced knowledge and special understanding of fine woodcraft to return to Crested Butte and advance his work to an entirely different level. His unique fine furniture pieces and attention to detail sets him apart from the rest.
